Shortly after the 6.8 Nisqually earthquake in the Seattle and Olympia area in 2001, KDW was hired to perform an extensive inspection of 25 properties owned by the region’s primary telecommunications company.

From switching centers and equipment storage facilities, to office and administrative buildings, KDW architects and engineers provided visual observations of each structure, supported by photos and formal recommendations for further seismic investigation or repairs where significant damage was observed.

Observations were categorized as 1.) structural, requiring an engineered design solution; 2.) weather, requiring abatement and possible repair of water infiltration; and 3.) cosmetic, requiring appearance-related repairs.

As a result of this study, seven facilities were identified as requiring repairs, which were subsequently coordinated by KDW.
