KDW was hired to design a 1,500 sf expansion to an existing single story telephone switching facility. The original facility had undergone three prior additions, but little was available in the form of record drawings. Extensive As-Built documentation and field investigation was required to create a record from which to design the new addition.

The switching equipment area was more than doubled, a new, separate administration room was created, new centralized HVAC, AC and DC power plants were created along with new restroom facilities and janitor's room. Included in the renovation was the replacement of the existing 90 kW generator for replacement with a larger 250 kW generator, as well as the Fuel Supply system for 72 hour standby generator operation. The existing facility received a seismic upgrade to the extent possible and together with the new addition bears the status of an Essential Facility.

This project received two awards -- an Honor Award for Building Rehabilitation from the Masonry Institute of Washington, and an Honorable Mention for Building Rehabilitation from the Masonry Contractors Association of America.
